...had a busy week, so no new deviations in the last few days.

However, things will start moving again this week, as i'll continue to walk through my
pictures of last summer's trip to China and my December excursion to Berlin and France.

Now that temperatures stay a little above zero, i can finally take my camera outside without
freezing to death or getting caught in a blizzard :-).
Next weekend i'll be shooting some pictures in Paris and Antwerp, and the weekend after that i'm going 'Far North' to Leiden, Delft and Rotterdam. And if there's still time, I finally want to have
a detailed look at that wonderfull piece of architecture called Liege-Guillemins...

Hello everyone,

As i am now two months in my PhD, things start to get serious.
Next week i will be poisoning my dear little Arabidopsis plants with low level nuclear waste ressembling that of Chernobyl to see if they survive or not, and if Working in a high surveillance lab can be rather stressful, but then i'm a stress physiologist, so i should be able to cope..

On a more joyful note, We're (We, that's me and :iconsnowva: :-)) to Berlin in three weeks. It will be cold, it will be very very cold, but it will be beautiful :-). I'm looking forward to revisiting what i consider one of the most beautiful cities in Europe. I went there 6 years ago on a school trip and i'm anxious to see how it has evolved.
Berlin has some brilliant architecture, old and new, and for a 'steel and glass' fanatic like me, it's heaven :p.

You will have noticed that i've put up some more pictures of China. Occasional slowdowns in my posting activity don't mean i'm away, just that life at work and in general is rather busy :-).

Meanwhile, check out some of my gifted friends on DA:

I'm back, as you will have noticed by now by my slowly recovering DA activity.. I've travelled approximately 26000 km in the last two months (still calculating that in detail), through Belgium, China and France, with airplane stops in London and Finland. Over the next few months you'll see appear a small selection of the 5000+ photos i took.

For nostalgy's sake, i went on searching on DA to see if other people took the places i've visited from a different angle. Here's a small selection already...

And if you want to see stunning pictures from the same trip through China you can have a look here, of course: :iconsnowva:.

I'll be away from DA for the next 45 days, as i will be travelling through China to talk my Nikon D60 for a walk :-).

The other good new is that i've got my Master degree in Molecular Biology :-p. At last.

See you all soon!!!

As I’m now subscribed (for the next two months at least), i can finally do some real features in my journal :-), starting with three deviants .

:iconsnowva: is a talented photographer, using different subjects as they show up spontaneously in front of her camera lens. You'll notice a keen interest in streetlights, pigeons, cats and everyday situations when browsing through her gallery.
Through Deviantart, we discovered that we share more common interests than photography :-), which is why she's also my girlfriend :-).

:thumb115087902: :thumb105953022: :thumb105163669: :thumb99205755: :thumb93699113:

:iconericforfriends: has a rather personal approach to photography, turning everyday situations or everyday views into something quite remarkable, while grasping the true nature of 'street' photography. Like myself, he never leaves the country without his camera. He also made me discover the strange and intruiging phenomenon of 'Cowleg Fog' :-p.

:iconk-boyd-photography: lives in the Dordogne, one of the most beautiful regions in France and one of the places i an truly call 'home'. Naturally, she can't resist taking pictures of it, which is quite normal.  She also does a lot of painting, and likes toying around with conceptual ideas. She has divided a lot of her work between her other accounts, and has just opened this one recently, so check :iconpens-n-feathers: (photography) and :iconcolourwheel: (paintings and drawings) for more.

My darling :iconsnowva: has tagged me, and as i have nothing else to
do on this rainy sunday afternoon, i accept :-p

The rules:

1. Post these rules.
2. Each tagged person must post 8 things about theirself on their journal.
3. At the end, you have to choose and tag some people and post their icons on the same journal.
4. Go to their pages and send a message saying you tagged them.
5. No tag-backs...

So here we go:

FACT 1. I'm a Plant Stress Physiologist. (Well...almost)
In practice, this means that i torture innoncent vegetal beings (by putting them in the oven for an hour or so), thus applying considerable stress, after which i cut them to pieces, grind them in a mortar and freeze them at -80°C.  Some may call this sadism and acts against all Vegetal Rights, others call it science :-)

I am also a stressED physiologist, but that's another, separate matter :-p.

FACT 2.  I'm a Belgian. Yes. Belgium! That small country between The Netherlands, country of cheese, charming little villages and cowleg fog… ,
and France, haven of even more heavenly cuisine (just try not to taste the andouillettes) and breathtaking views…. Squeezed between those two ancient countries filled with history, Belgium is quite feeble.  But we have a secret weapon...which brings me to

FACT 3. My chocolate addiction.  I don't want the light stuff...the so-called 'white chocolate'. Not even the milk chocolate kind (shamelessly propagated in commericals by scientifically unplausible purple cows).  No, i only eat the heavy stuff: 86% cacao fondant black chocolate.

FACT 4. I met my girlfriend, :iconsnowva:, on DA.

FACT 5. I admit to being a downright part-time geek.  Proof? Yesterday, I spent 10 minutes looking for an address through my cellphone browser, despite the small screen and the unhandy interface, while Google was on my computer screen in front of me :-p.

FACT 6. I love France. Goes without saying :-)

FACT 7. My cats (present and past) all have or had silly names.  My former cat, Atilla… lived up to the expectations of his illutrous name.  Every day he came back home from hunting with at least two or three snakes or birds (Pigeons, mainly...i would've liked pheasant though).  My present cat is called Figaro.  I've tried to teach him hairdressing, but that didn't really work out.  If i ever adopt another cat, it will be called Charles.

FACT 8. For all you people who wonder: Encephalartos is a Cycad Tree :-). This….

I tag :iconnfernov2: and :iconmorsheeba:

The name was attached to some faint keywords in my head that i couldn't really fit together.

'Blue' was one of them... 'Cheese' of course...  and 'University' somehow. In my mind i saw a Bruges-like museum city, filled with typical dutch houses, channels and boats.  An army of bicycles swarming through its streets... The Jungian archetype of 'The Dutch Town' :-p.

As i was going to live there for a month, i wikied that...
I was happy  to discover that most of my faint keyords fitted, and that my mind wasn't that chaotic after all :-).  Wikipedia didn't tell me a thing about the atmosphere however, so i left for Delft to find out myself...

The moment you put one foot in the town centre, you realise that this city has seen things.  It has seen the events of history flow towards the present.  It has seen Vermeer, the Eastindian Trading Company... It's still alive...

You've left us a year ago.
In silence.
And we miss you
But you're still here.
giving life through your ashes
to the wood where we said goodbye.

You left me a year ago.
It still leaves traces in my daily life.
You're still here
In my mind.
When i want to tell you about the people i've met lately.
The girl i like. My Life, in all. My words stay in my head.
Because we already said goodbye.

And although i don't believe that you can hear, see or read any of this.
And although i don't believe we will meet again.
I want you to know, mother:

You're still here.
In my mind and heart.

I'm leaving for France on Friday.
First i'll be visiting the capital for a week. (just me and my camera :-p) and then i'm going home to the Dordogne, where i'll be spending July and most of August. In the city, i will mostly travel on foot.  After all, the Metro is interesting but rather dark, and i would be missing most of the fun and the sights :-p.

I'm counting on 400 pictures every day..for a start :-p.

I've posted some pictures from the Alps already.  More are to come, but i must

At the moment, i'm writing the first part of my MSc. thesis on mitochondrial respiration vigour of Colza/Canola lines with differences in epigenetic selection. (Oops...i just lost half of my readers...)

It has been exactly 5 years since i first (and last) visited Paris.  Sure, i've been there this summer, for about 3 hours.  The time to walk from Trocadéro to Etoile and back.  I've been there only 4 weeks ago, for 2 hours. The time travelling from Gare du Nord to Austerlitz.  But you can't call that 'visiting', can you?

I want to see the Louvre, Montmartre, Musée d'Orsay, Père Lachaise, and most of all the Musée Marmottan, sanctuary of the Monet Nympheas and Impression, Soleil Levant.  THAT's visiting Paris.  Paris is marvelling at La Défense, drinking your morning coffee in a corner bar tabac.  It's the flow of millions of people crawling through its streets like ants.  It's Rive Gauche, St Férréol, Rivoli.  It's Beaubourg, Châtelet and le 16ième... It's...well...Paris :-)

And i'm going back there..for one week...with my camera...and a 23GB HD....July the 5th :-)

C'est reviens...!
